Day 17 and Fried Lilies

It's day 17 of temperatures over 90 degrees, and almost no rain.  There are sporadic crazy storms that pop up in different locations late every afternoon, but alas, none at the Stepchild Garden. Running the sprinklers means basically just keeping things alive; everything is going to seed so quickly it's a daily routine of deadheading to keep some summer color.

Going outside this morning to trim away some more fried flower blossoms in the perennial bed.  Can you tell that I'm a little cranky about it?

  1. Tim,
That is terrible news. Permission granted to be a little cranky. Hang in there!

  2. The good thing about lilies is that they always come back.. These may look fried, but the bulb I am sure is fine.... pull the dead leaves away, it'll promote new growth.

  3. The temperatures have been outrageous but as least we've had consistent rain. I'm sorry to hear that you have not. Yesterday was actually tolerable. It was overcast and not as hot. I got a lot done.

  4. Wow, I would be cranky, too. Lilies are normally so tough! We've had rain, rain, and more rain... and hot but not quite that hot. It's sometimes hard being a gardener.

  5. I'm with you. We haven't had but a couple of showers over the past two weeks. And even that hasn't been enough to bring things back. I can't water my whole yard. So I keep the veggies moist and let the rest fend for itself. I'm thinking next year I'll just plant nothing but yarrow and coneflowers. I'm going to be editing a lot this fall. The shastas need to go.

  6. We hit 94 today. It's hot, hot, and dry! Trying to fight off all of our plants from wilting. Sorry about your day lilies.

  7. When I saw the title of this post, I thought you'd been cooking. Afternoon thunderstorms are what we've had this month ... it's better than nothing.

  8. Hi Tim!

BUT......EVERY biting insect thrives! Is this what we have to look forward to with global warming?

  9. You are having the exact opposite weather we're having, and I guess both extremes make gardening difficult. My lilies bent over covered in mold. Hope you get some rain for your garden!
