Seeds, Seeds, Seeds

Today was the perfect day for getting some seeds started. It couldn't decide if it was going to rain or not, so it was great weather for mixing up some starter mix and filling those tiny little pockets with seeds of promised plants to come......burgundy okra (nasty vegetable in my mind, but beautiful flowers), cup-and-saucer vine, Japanese eggplant, bush basil, nicotiana, and ambrosia were planted today. The mignonette and artichokes have already sprouted, as have Mary's Thai chiles. It's cold and windy outside right now, but at least these tiny little seeds give me hope that summer is coming!

  1. Seed sowing is something I love about gardening. I always get excited when I see a seedling peeking out, no matter how many seedlings I've seen, a new seedling always excites me!

  2. I do love okra Red Queen it's a beautiful plant. Plus it is super easy to save the seeds. Another even bigger but equally beautiful one is Caster Beans. Got to love the hybiscus family!

  3. I love castor bean, as well. At the Big House, there is a brick wall around the vegetable garden, which results in the garden holding heat into the night in summer. That, in turn, results in very tall plants. Two years ago we had one castor bean that topped out at 14 feet! This year I'm planting them in a different location.....

  4. Hi Tim

Good luck with the seed starting.

I too grew a castor bean a few years ago which turned into a triffid. It was 'Carmencita red' and topped 8 feet.

  6. Starting those first seeds are always exciting to me! I have been eating lettuce and bunching onions most of the winter! Past weekend I have started a few more items in the garden, mostly Root veggies! Cant wait for that first tomato!
    Happy Gardening!
