The End of An Era

I got an email from a gardening friend a couple of days ago, just confirming the news that we all knew was coming.  The bankruptcy auction has been scheduled for Park Seed and it's various divisions (including Jackson & Perkins), part of the Chapter 11 "restructuring" the company is undergoing.

What a sad ending for an American institution.  I don't think there are many gardeners who couldn't recognize this logo as quickly as the golden arches.

  1. That is so sad! I hate it when great companies go bankrupt. This economy is so tough on so many industries right now.

  2. Hi Tim,
I haven't heard of them here in the UK, but it is still sad to see such an institution go under. Oh, how governments are quick to bail out troubled banks and large corporate businesses, but never the ones closer to our hearts, rather than pockets!

  3. I am so sad to see this great company pass. I have purchased seeds from them for years. I am like Gary, the government bails out mega institutes and let the business's suffer and collapes. Such sad times we have, and one less seed company trying to bring color to a unhappy world.

  4. Certainly was less fattening than the other icon. I have bought many seeds over the years from them. Way sad.

  5. Hi Tim, I know how you feel. When a great nursery closed in our LA area Hortus Garden it was in the LA Times it was so sad to see this nursery close. Dont get me wrong but I rather do my shopping for roses at a nusery rather than at a chain home buliding store. Have a great week....Julian

  6. Very sad, indeed. Specialty nurseries and seed houses seem to be closing at an alarming rate in the last few years. I get Plant Delight Nursery's e-newsletter, and it seems like every time I read it, Tony Avent talks about yet another one closing, usually for financial reasons. If this keeps up, we'll only be left with the big box garden centers - ghastly thought!

  8. I haven't heard what the plan is for Park...perhaps we'll know when the season's catalogs arrive (or don't). Let's hope this serves as a reminder to all of us to support local businesses.
