Not the Kind of Weather I Moved South For!

This view out the window of my office is  much more like the view I chose to leave behind in New England several years ago, and definitely not one I would have chosen for my view in suburban Atlanta.  Fortunately this only happens once every few years, so I guess I can handle it.

Since "The Stepchild Garden" has really not seen snow (at least during my ownership), it was fun to take a few photos this afternoon while the white stuff is still coming down.
The Daphne Odora is definitely not a plant that's liking this weather, but the contrast of the blooms about to open and the heavy snow covering was pretty at the bottom of the front steps when I went outside. It's been here for four years, so it's probably about ready to drop dead soon anyway.  (It's one of my favorite miserable plants).

The Hinoki Cypress shows its form far better with a little "icing," as does the Doublefile Viburnum, below.

At the end of the day, however, Sadie the Dog is definitely a Southern Girl.  She managed to keep her legs crossed for the first few hours of the snow, but finally relented and went  outside in a complete snit!

  1. Does this weather bring out your New England accent? I love your dog, she is great.

  2. I honestly have a bit of an "hybrid" accent, but the New England part definitely comes out when I'm cursing this weather! Sadie is definitely an "hybrid," as well. She's curled up on the sofa pouting at the moment because of the snow.

  3. Tim, Well this is a twist, reading a blog from Atlanta with pictures of snow ... Hope it does not cause you guys to many problems in and around the metro area. Miss Sadie looks to be a real "Sweetie". - G

  4. The snow looks pretty on your garden. I laughed at what you said about your Daphne, true isn't it? I'm afraid to get too attached at mine. Your dog sounds like mine, she'll wait forever until I practically force her out if there's snow outside.

  5. It missed us this time, most of it was in south Alabama. We have another chance Sunday. I'm tired of it!

  6. Poor Sadie, poor Tim.

I will be so glad when this awful winter is over!

  8. The thing with colder climates is, plants prepare and go dormant, so snow is fine, and even good as cover/insulation. Not so in warmer climates so I understand why you don't want so.... but I still think it looks nice. Sorry! (P.S. Fiona insists I mention that dogs are big wusses. Sorry. Cats can be condescending! LOL!)

  9. The plants really are my biggest concern. The snow is a pain, but one I grew up with, so it's not a big deal. Unfortunately I often "push the ticket" with plants from zone 8 and 9 in my garden, which definitely won't make it through this current winter!

Fiona is right! (I've owned both). Cats are just bitchier....

  10. I was going to comment on your nice winter photos but I am a dog person and I won't bother. What a neat dog!

  11. I currently have a dog, but have owned both dogs and cats in the past. I can't say that I prefer one over the other; they're such distinctly different creatures, both have added enormously to my life. Since Sadie was a rescue who needed incredible amounts of attention when we first got her, we've always allowed her to be the only child in the house. She has developed into a total doll baby.....

  12. That is such a beautiful photo of Sadie. I feel as if I can jut reach into the screen and touch her wet nose.
